Adam Czekanski, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District, and Michelle Buys, the director of Environmental Compliance for Allegheny County Sanitary Authority (ALCOSAN), exchange documents to sign a Public Partnership Agreement, while Rich Fitzgerald, Allegheny County executive stands witness, during a ceremony in Pittsburgh, Jan. 11, 2023. The two organizations signed an agreement to authorize funding for construction of a grit chamber along Spring Garden Run, a neighborhood located in the northern area of Pittsburgh. The grit chamber construction is estimated to cost approximately $4.3 million and expected to finish by the end of 2024. Once implemented, the chamber will remove 200,000 pounds of grit and sediment annually from the sewer system that causes long-term damage to treatment facilities.
