U.S. Army Lt. Lieutenant Andrew Gilbert, a project Engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Japan Engineer District (JED), shows Japanese Ground Self Defense Force (JGSDF) member 1st Lt. Shinji Kohara, the platoon leader for the 1st Engineer battalion, a photo and video of a detonation exercise procedure on his phone, at Camp Zama, Japan. Gilbert and Kohara, both Engineers, were brought together by the Co-Op program, a bilateral exchange opportunity created by U.S. Army Japan and the JGSDF in 1995, for the purpose of obtaining a better cultural understanding of each other and learning how to better integrate tactics and strategies between the two nations.
