U.S. Marine Chief Warrant Officer 4 Anton Cuevas, officer in charge of the 1st Marine Air Wing’s Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Platoon, briefs leaders from the U.S. Marines, Army and Japan Ground Self-Defense Force before a mass casualty exercise as part of Keen Sword 23, at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa, Japan, Nov. 12.
The exercise featured Soldiers from the U.S. Army’s 95th Chemical Company, 17th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 11th Airborne Division, Marines from across III Marine Expeditionary Force, and service members from the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force’s 102nd Nuclear, Biological, Chemical Company, reacting to a suspected attack and saw them detect contaminants, identify and remove casualties, and conduct decontamination as a joint, bilateral force. Exercise Keen Sword Is a biennial, bilateral training evolution that strengthens the U.S.-Japan Alliance and ensures security and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
