Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Martha Kester displays a memorial bracelet in honor of Iowa National Guard Soldier Sgt. 1st Class Terryl Pasker outside her home in Des Moines, Iowa, on Sept. 30, 2022. Kester, alongside Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Heather Simon, have made history together by becoming the first women to serve as State Chaplains, both in their states and in the country. Kester will serve the Iowa National Guard, while Simon will serve the New Jersey National Guard. When she’s not supporting Soldiers, Kester serves as a rector of a Des Moines Episcopal congregation. Kester wears the bracelet in Pasker’s honor after he was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2010. (U.S. Army National Guard photo by Staff Sgt. Tawny Kruse)
