U.S. and Azerbaijan military and civilian officials participate in a disaster response tabletop exercise Sept. 20-22 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Top leaders at the workshop included Maj. Gen. Niyazi Zamanov, head of the Department of Civil Defense in the Azerbaijan Ministry of Emergency Situations (second from right), and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Director of Military Programs Dr. Christine Altendorf (third from right). The exercise was sponsored by the Civil-Military Emergency Preparedness program and included the participation of first responders from Azerbaijan and the United States. CMEP program events facilitate inter-ministerial and civil-military cooperation, enhance Armed Forces capabilities to provide defense support to civil authority, and foster regional / multilateral cooperation to support response to disasters.
