Lt. Albert Young, of Newark, California and a graduate of Newark Memorial High School, University of California, Davis and University of Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, is a general dentist assigned to Naval Hospital Bremerton/Navy Medicine Readiness Training Command Bremerton.
Young’s career has had him assigned to commands on opposite side of the Pacific theater of operations, from the Far East to the Pacific Northwest.
“During my attachment with 3d Dental Battalion in Okinawa, Japan, I was attached to the 31st Marine Expedition Unit as the combat dentist. My roles include being the general dentist responsible of the dental health of over 2,000 Marines and responsible of the Nightingale Triage Team [a response force to triage casualties, prioritized for advanced medical care]. I enjoyed working side by side with my Sailors and Marines in getting any exercise completed from en route care on V-22 Ospreys and CH-53 Sea Stallions to getting in morning physical training at 4 a.m.
After his involvement in the field on the ‘green side’ with the Devil Dogs, Young’s current duty has him dealing with more Navy surface – and subsurface – environments.
“This is the first command where I've worked with submariners. This experience has showed me how there are so many different jobs and applications within the Navy. Not one job is the same,” remarked Young.
When asked to sum up his experience with Navy Medicine, Young replied, “My biggest surprise of being in Navy Medicine is how diverse the service is. We have people from all different backgrounds and that is our greatest asset, our ability to think differently. Navy Medicine needs to embrace this to succeed.”
