The Essayons, one of two hopper dredges owned and operated by the Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, performs emergency dredging on the lower Columbia River near Longview, Washington, July 25. The dredge, operated by a merchant marine crew, helps maintain the entrance bars, rivers and harbors on the coasts of California, Oregon, Hawaii, Alaska and, in emergencies, the Mississippi River. In this photo, the dredge’s drag arm—which acts like a vacuum cleaner head to suck up sediment from the bottom of rivers and harbors—is being raised out of the water.
