Larry Calame (second from left), a master on the Essayons, one of two hopper dredges owned and operated by the Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, explains how the dredge works to Corps visitors touring the dredge during operations near Longview, Washington, July 25. Calame is one of only a few plankowners—crewmembers who have served aboard a vessel since the time it was first placed in commission—currently working on the Portland District’s hopper dredge fleet. He began working on the Essayons in 1982, a full year before it was commissioned in Astoria, Oregon. The Essayons, operated by a merchant marine crew, helps maintain the entrance bars, rivers and harbors on the coasts of California, Oregon, Hawaii, Alaska and, in emergencies, the Mississippi River.
