With a volume of more than 6,400 cubic yards—or about 500 average-sized dump trucks—the hopper bin holds the sediment the dredge sucks up from the bottoms of rivers and harbors. The Essayons, operated by a merchant marine crew, helps maintain the entrance bars, rivers and harbors on the coasts of California, Oregon, Hawaii, Alaska and, in emergencies, the Mississippi River.
