Johnnie Thomas serves as a boatswain on the Essayons, one of two hopper dredges owned and operated by the Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. As a boatswain, Thomas manages the vessel’s deck department, overseeing maintenance and repairs of its dredging equipment. He has served on the Essayons for six years. The Essayons, operated by a merchant marine crew, helps maintain the entrance bars, rivers and harbors on the coasts of California, Oregon, Hawaii, Alaska and, in emergencies, the Mississippi River.
