Eddie Morgan, a marine machinery mechanic on the Essayons, one of two hopper dredges owned and operated by the Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, braces himself on the dredge’s launch boat near Longview, Washington, July 25 during a trip to bring Corps employees aboard the vessel for a tour. The Essayons was in the area to perform emergency dredging on the lower Columbia River. The dredge, operated by a merchant marine crew, helps maintain the entrance bars, rivers and harbors on the coasts of California, Oregon, Hawaii, Alaska and, in emergencies, the Mississippi River.
