Wayne Gehman, the commanding officer of Independence-variant littoral combat ship USS Kansas City (LCS 22). The “Battle E” award recognizes crews with high levels of sustained proficiency and readiness to perform in an operational environment throughout a year-long evaluation. LCS are fast, agile, mission-focused platforms designed to operate in near-shore environments, winning against 21st-century coastal threats.
