Colt Phillips, assigned to 173rd Airborne Brigade, train with a recoilless rifle during a readiness drill at the Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy, July 27, 2022. The exercise tested the capability of the North and West Africa Response Force (NARF) to respond to crises and protect American interests in Africa. U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa supports U.S. Africa Command with a scalable crisis response capability ranging from a rapid response infantry platoon all the way to a full-scale joint task force headquarters. Joined my elements of the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Air Force for aviation lift and a host of other capabilities, SETAF-AF and 173rd Airborne Infantry Brigade forms the nucleus a the North and West Africa Response Force, or NARF.
