Hundreds of men and women complete the final field training exercise named The Forge just about monthly on Fort Jackson. The exercise is a culminating event designed to test all the skills and knowledge a trainee learns during Basic Combat Training.
The Forge successfully completes once trainees march to Hilton Field for the Soldier Ceremony.
During the ceremony, drill sergeants place the U.S. Army patch on the trainee’s left arm and are told to replace their patrol caps with berets the trainees stored in their cargo pockets. Once placed on their heads, they have officially earned the title of Soldier.
For Pfc. Anajsia Certain of Company B, 3rd Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment, the military lifestyle and her expectations of Basic Combat Training were not a surprise. She is the daughter of a service member and grew up familiar with the Army and the odd work schedules and hours its members keep.
However, she shined early morning on July 14 as she participated in her own Soldier Ceremony. Not only was she patched and declared a Soldier by a drill sergeant, but that drill sergeant also happened to be her mother Staff Sgt. Tallia Certain.
Staff Sgt. Certain is a drill sergeant leader assigned to the U.S. Army Drill Sergeant Academy and was able to attend and participate in her daughter’s ceremony.
Post Command Sgt. Maj. Philson Tavernier attended the ceremony and was on hand to witness the occasion of the duo throughout the ceremony. Tavernier spoke with the pair and took pictures to honor the moment the family legacy of military service is carried on.
