Kevin Braafladt, historian at the U.S. Army Sustainment Command, points to a slide illustrating the construction of Rock Island Arsenal during a presentation at the Rock Island (Illinois) Public Library on July 13. ASC is based at the arsenal and the command’s history office is presenting a series of lectures at public libraries in both Rock Island and nearby Davenport, Iowa, as part of the observance of RIA’s 160th anniversary. The July 13 lecture was titled “A Grand National Arsenal: The Establishment of Rock Island Arsenal” and outlined how an island in the Mississippi River between the states of Illinois and Iowa was chosen as the site of an installation designed for the manufacture and storage of military weapons and equipment.
