A U.S. Marine Corps F-35B Lightning II with Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron 1, prepares for takeoff from the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli (LHA 7) as part of the U.S. Marine Corps’ lightning carrier concept demonstration off the coast of Southern California, April 3, 2022. The lightning carrier concept demonstration shows Tripoli and other amphibious assault ships are capable of operating as dedicated fixed-wing platforms when needed, capable of bringing fifth generation short takeoff/vertical landing aircraft wherever they are required. This was the first time maximum capacity F-35B Lightning II aircraft were tested for operation aboard a landing helicopter assault (LHA) amphibious assault ship. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt.
