The Soufriere Hills volcano on the island of Montserrat emitted a plume of ash and/or steam on June 10, 2006. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer modis.gsfc.nasa.gov/ (MODIS) flying onboard NASA's aqua.nasa.gov/ Aqua satellite took this picture the same day. In this image, the volcanic island sports a outlined in red, where the satellite sensor detected ground surface temperatures much warmer than the surroundings. The thin volcanic plume blows away from the volcano, westward over the Caribbean.

NASA image created by Jesse Allen, Earth Observatory, using data obtained from the daac.gsfc.nasa.gov/ Goddard Earth Sciences DAAC.
