Physician Laila Waseem Mohammed speaks to a patient at the Al Naqueeb Hospital in Aden, Yemen, in February 2022. In Yemen, the health system has been hollowed out by years of conflict, leaving critical staffing and skills gaps at many facilities. To strengthen Yemen’s healthcare workforce, USAID funds pre-employment training for health workers on-site at hospitals and health facilities, which then hire participants from the trainings. Dr. Laila is among 113 health workers hired by the Al Naqueeb Hospital after completing USAID-funded training there in December 2021. “To be a doctor, who rescues the wounded in war, means to give without limits,” said Dr. Laila, who treats civilians, including children, wounded in Yemen’s fighting. Since September 2020, USAID has supported the training and hiring of 475 health workers at 16 health facilities in the Aden and Hadramout governorates.
