The Atchafalaya is a split-hull trailing suction hopper dredge that disposes of material by bottom-dumping or pumping out through an onboard pump system. Atchafalaya, is being used because of its maneuverability within the harbor’s turning basins. The Dredging of Palm Beach Harbor is a part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintenance dredging project. The present harbor dredging effort calls for the removal of approximately 390,000 cubic yards of accumulated material from the harbor’s entrance channel, settling basin, the southern and northern turning basins, among other sections. It is the most extensive dredging operation in Palm Beach Harbor in the past two decades. (USACE photo by Brigida Sanchez)
