220320-N-OB471-1144 NORFOLK, VA (Mar. 20, 2022) Vice Adm. Kenneth Whitesell, commander, Naval Air Forces, speaks at the Centennial of U.S. Navy Aircraft Carriers Recognition Ceremony, hosted by the Navy League of the United States Hampton Roads, March 20. The ceremony commemorated the commissioning of Navy’s first aircraft carrier, USS Langley (CV 1), on March 20, 1922. In the 100 years since, aircraft carriers have been the Navy’s preeminent power projection platform and have served the nation’s interest in times of war and peace. With an unequaled ability to provide warfighting capabilities across the full spectrum of conflict, and to adapt in an ever-changing world, aircraft carriers, their air wings, and associated strike groups are the foundation of U.S. maritime strategy.
