"My name is Ariel Strenk, I am 27 with two crazy kiddos who are 5 and
    1. My husband is SGT Strenk, a Supply NCOIC with 3DSB. This was my
husband's first deployment but the second one I have been involved
with. At our last duty station I was a FRG volunteer as a key caller,
which is just a fancy name for someone who tries to keep families
updated and be a point of contact. That leads me into my first bit of
advice, make sure your spouse's FRG contact information is updated and
correct. Not only will the FRG disseminate important information but
they might also have events where you can get together with other
spouses going through the same situation. Don't be afraid to go to
those events or others put on by the community (Deployed Love, USO,
MWR, the Housing Community often have events monthly if not weekly) it
will help time pass by getting out of the home for things other than work, school, groceries, etc.
This deployment was especially difficult for my family because we had
moved only a couple of weeks earlier and I had a 5 month old newborn.
Transitioning through a new home, new school, new job, new everything
while my husband was across the world was definitely a challenge. I
had a mind set that I had to be so strong and handle everything on my
own, but sometimes it just isn't possible. I listened to friends and
family, I sought counseling, and I learned how to ask for help. If
there is any advice I would strongly encourage, it is to ask for and
seek help. I found a wonderful housekeeper who is another army spouse
who knew exactly what I was going through, I used a laundry service
when I felt overwhelmed, I learned to let my kids stay with
babysitters, and gave myself grace at the end of each day when I was anxious about everything that needed to be done.
Some spouses take the time to learn a new hobby, go to school,
redecorate the house from top to bottom. But if you are like me, be
proud of yourself for just surviving the day to day."
