U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Mathew Kearney, a chief instructor at the Jungle Warfare Training Center (JWTC), observes a reconnaissance sniper platoon with Battalion Landing Team 1/5, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), conducting a stalking exercises at the JWTC, Okinawa, Japan, Jan. 8, 2022. Scout snipers play an integral part in the the Marine Corps' "A Concept for Stand-In Forces," operating as the eyes and ears of the ground force commander, allowing for a more efficient decision making process. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps' only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible and lethal force ready to perform a wide range of military operations as the premiere crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific region.
