A volunteer from the University of Wisconsin La Crosse tosses a ball to an Afghan evacuee during a soccer game at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, Jan. 4, 2022. Afghan children ages 4 to 10 were invited to participate in biking, volleyball, card games and gymnastic events with volunteers from the University of Wisconsin La Crosse. The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible.
