STS-66 Commander Donald McMonagle takes information from equipment used in a Heat Pipe Performance 2 (HPP-2) Experiment being conducted on the middeck of the Space Shuttle Atlantis. The heat pipe was designed to make it easier for space vehicles to reject excess heat generated by their equipment and crews. It operates on the natural phenomenon of liquids absorbing heat to evaporate and release that heat when condensing.
