Cpl. Peter Santana, an administrative specialist with Headquarters Company, 23rd Marine Regiment, from Rodeo, California, poses for a portrait at Fort Pickett, Virginia on Dec. 31, 2021. Santana studies civil engineering at Contra Costa College, San Pablo, California. Civil engineering consists of the planning, construction and maintenance of public structures, such as roads, bridges and airports. Santana uses his planning knowledge to help see the bigger picture when conducting travel claims, resolving pay issues and keeping accountability of DoD personnel within Task Force Pickett. When asked about Operation Allies Welcome, Santana said "This operation is another representation of how I can help fight for a cause greater than my own. After interacting with our guests, I feel extremely proud and motivated of the hard work we are doing to help these families have a place to call home." The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible. This initiative provides Afghan personnel essential support at secure locations outside Afghanistan. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. David Intriago)
