Justin Kerwin, senior park ranger, and Dalton Silvis, park ranger, stand with the Small Unit Support Vehicle at the Chena River Lakes Flood Control Project. An amphibious vehicle, staff at the project office use it to access certain parts of the project that are not otherwise accessible due to high water or challenging terrain. Park rangers also use it on particularly cold days in the winter months prevent injury from exposure to the cold while patrolling the nearly 20,000 acres of public land. On a snowmobile, their typical vehicle for winter patrols, wind chills can exceed negative 80 degrees when outdoor temperatures are negative 30 degrees or less.
