Col. Kirk Gibbs, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Pacific Ocean Division, met with representatives from the Port of Alaska on Jan. 22 in Anchorage, Alaska. USACE Alaska District, a component of the division, assists the port by dredging annually from May to November. This keeps the sediment from collecting on the seafloor for safe navigation through the waterway and allows an estimated 2,400 to 2,600 cargo containers to arrive at the port each week to keep stores supplied with consumer goods.
