U.S. Marine Corps Col. Michael Nakonieczny, commanding officer of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), receives a command brief from Col. Takeshi Higuchi of the Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade (ARDB) on Camp Ainoura, Sasebo, Japan, Oct. 15, 2021. U.S. Marines observed an ARDB-led command post exercise and discussed future opportunities for the two countries to continue to build their foundation and learn from one another. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps' only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible and lethal force ready to perform a wide range of military operations as the premier crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific region.
