211014-N-EV253-1261 SAN DIEGO (Oct. 14, 2021) – Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handler) 2nd Class Marricco Roberts (left), from Atlanta, Georgia, and Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handler) 1st Class Brandi Fleming (right), from Rancho Cucamonga, both assigned to the “Merlins” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 3 as instructors of the Landing Signalman Enlisted (LSE) course, prepare to address a group of students during a graded evolution at Naval Outlying Landing Field in Imperial Beach, California, Oct. 14. During the evolution, the instructors guided LSE students in implementing proper hand signaling techniques and protocol used to communicate with helicopter pilots and other ground personnel during flight deck operations such as basic approach and vertical replenishment. The “Merlins” of HSC-3, stationed on Naval Air Station, North Island in Coronado, California, serve as the course curriculum model manager for the course, and train all Pacific Fleet Helicopter Control Officers and LSEs.
