Senior Airman Chad M. Koon, left, and retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Richard Kibbey, right, tour the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency's (DPAA) lab on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, Oct. 29, 2021. Kibbey and Koon attended Col. Richard A. Kibbey's Chain of Custody ceremony as surviving family members, where they formally received his remains. While conducting a rescue and recovery mission in an HH-3E helicopter over North Vietnam, Kibbey and fellow aircrew received enemy fire which resulted in an internal explosion and crash. Kibbey was officially identified on Aug. 6, 2018.The additional remains were recovered and turned over by the government of Vietnam. DPAA is grateful for the continued partnership with Vietnam especially as the global Covid-19 pandemic has made international travel more difficult. Today, there are still 1,584 missing service members from the Vietnam War. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. James Thompson)
