U.S. Marines and soldiers prepare to detonate and observe the effects of additively manufactured breaching charges during the Munitions Optimization Workshop Demolition training on Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan, Oct. 19, 2021. Over 40% reduction of blast overpressure exposure was achieved through advanced munition design at U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM AC) enabled through additively manufactured geometries from Expeditionary Systems Engineering Division (ESED) increasing force protection and longevity of the force. U.S. Marines train with specialists from DEVCOM AC and ESED, a Naval Surface Warfare Detachment from Fallbrook, CA, with Soldiers and Airmen to enhance ideas and tactics and improve inter-service relations. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward deployed MEU, provides a flexible and lethal force ready to perform a wide range of military operations as the premier crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific region.
