Maryland National Guard Spc. Breyana Pope of the 58th Expeditionary Military Intelligence Brigade, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, directs traffic at the Six Flags Mass Vaccination Site in Bowie, Maryland, March 25, 2021. (U.S. Army National Guard photo by Sgt. Arcadia Hammack)
Pope, a Baltimore, Maryland native, is currently working at the Six Flags Mass Vaccination Site. She has been tasked with “observation”, which is to ensure patients have no adverse side effects for 15 minutes after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, as well as traffic duty in the observation area. When Pope is not supporting the Guard, you can find her at Morgan State University as a graduate student studying Public Health, or working as a bioprocess associate, where she creates COVID vaccines and works to keep the pH of the vaccine steady for Emergent BioSolutions in downtown Baltimore. Pope graduated with her bachelor’s degree in Biology from Bowie State University in 2019, and is scheduled to graduate as a Master of Public Health from Morgan State University in 2022.
“It's amazing to just think about how I'm actually studying this right now,” said Pope. “I joined the Guard because I wanted to give back to my community, and now I can actually help and give back to the people around me during this big pandemic.”
