Japan Air Self-Defense Force Tech. Sgt. Koji Tada, K-9 kennel master, works with his military working dog, Hien, during an MWD training course at Yokota Air Base, Japan, Oct. 14, 2021. Testing MWD’s proficiency in different environments is crucial because wind is less prevalent in enclosed spaces and therefore scents are more restricted and harder to pick up. Yokota’s 374th Security Forces Squadron MWD section helps establish and maintain proficiency for Japanese MWDs and their handlers by providing explosives and narcotics detection training courses for the Koku Jieitai (Japan Air Self-Defense Force), Japan Customs, and the Japanese National Police Agency.
