U.S. Marines with Marine Wing Support Squadron 171 use a circular saw to simulate the damage of an airfield during Exercise Active Shield at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, Oct. 22, 2021. Later in the exercise, the support squadron is scheduled to be evaluated on their ability to rapidly repair the damage on the runway for operation. Active Shield is an annual bilateral training exercise designed to test U.S. and Japanese forces in their ability to respond to contingencies and cooperatively address challenges faced by the installation.
