Annalisa Berardinelli, a volunteer from the United States Department of Health and Human Services, assists Afghan guests during an English class on Fort Pickett, Virginia, Sept. 27, 2021. Afghan individuals are offered a variety of classes while they move through the process of starting a new life in the U.S. The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible.
