A volunteer with Millennium Relief and Development Services gives a notebook to an Afghan individual during an American culture class on Fort Picket, Virginia, Sept. 27, 2021. Afghan individuals are offered a variety of classes while they move through the process of starting a new life in the U.S. The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible.
