A C-17 Globemaster III from Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma, prepares for takeoff while an F-35 Lightning II taxis on the runway Sept. 13, 2021, at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona. The C-17 will be transporting more than 40 Luke Airmen to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey, in support of Operation Allies Welcome. The Department of Defense recently approved a request for assistance from the State Department to provide support at JB MDL, along with Fort McCoy, Wisconsin; Fort Bliss, Texas; Fort Lee, Virginia; and Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico. Luke Airmen rapidly mobilized to answer the call for support with less than a four-day notice, to assist with temporary housing, sustainment and support of Afghan evacuees.
