U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. John F. West, a military working dog (MWD) handler and his MWD, Dan, with 3rd Law Enforcement Battalion, III Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group (MIG), pose for a photo on Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan, Aug. 17, 2021. Due to the Marine Corps Commandant’s Force Design for 2030 and the deactivation of 3rd Law Enforcement Battalion coming this October, West and MWD Dan are soon leaving Okinawa. “We’re disbanding,” said West. “The handlers staying in will be dispersed out to base units, while the dogs will be shipped out to other branches and units.” Luckily, West won’t have to say goodbye to his furry friend, for he’s decided to adopt Dan, a soon-to-be retired MWD, and will be flying out of Okinawa with him.
