Wyatt Morris (left) and Jack Dabek, two midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy, hoist an autonomous underwater vehicle for deployment aboard the University of Delaware (UD) research vessel Joanne Daiber, June 15, 2021. The midshipmen are participating in a multi-partner mission with UD, Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC), and SEARCH20 to confirm the location of USS Nina, which was lost at sea in 1910 with 31 crewmembers. Sonar technology can create a composite image of seafloors for researchers, allowing them to examine evidence at sea without performing a manned dive. NHHC is responsible for managing, researching, preserving and interpreting the U.S. Navy’s collection of sunken military craft, which includes more than 2,500 shipwrecks and 14,000 aircraft wrecks dispersed globally.
