PACIFIC OCEAN (May 20, 2021) U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Scott Simmons, a machine gunner with Light Armored Reconnaissance Company, Battalion Landing Team 1/1, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), dons medical gloves before Valkyrie whole blood transfusion training aboard amphibious transport dock USS Portland (LPD 27), May 20. The Valkyrie program is designed to teach military medical responders how and when to apply a whole blood transfusion to casualties in a combat environment to help save lives.
