U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Samuel R. Jones, a damage controlman aboard maritime security cutter USCGC Bertholf (WMSL 750), poses for a photo aboard the ship in the Arctic Ocean Aug. 29, 2012, as part of Operation Arctic Shield 2012. Jones was responsible for firefighting and being the on-scene leader during flight operations, and was part of the damage response team. Arctic Shield is a U.S. Coast Guard-directed exercise in conjunction with federal, state and tribal officials designed to test the Spilled Oil Response System as well as strengthen law enforcement and search-and-rescue capabilities in the Arctic regions of Alaska.
