Seaman Laura Roesch stands at the helm on watch on the Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf in the Arctic Ocean, Sept. 1, 2012. The Bertholf is deployed as part of Operation Arctic Shield and and is a presencein the Arctic for the Coast Guard, which has a long history of working with Alaska Native partners who reside in the Arctic. Advance teams that included the 17th District commander and senior staff members deployed to the Arctic and actively engaged with tribal leaders during the planning phases of Arctic Shield to ensure operations would not conflict with tribal rights, interests or subsistence activities.
