Firefighting inmates from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (DEPCOR), Fresno Kings Unit, Miramonte Camp, begin their upward line-cutting assessment May 12, 2021, at the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Millerton training site in Friant, California. Inmates have been used to battle wildfires for decades through a CAL FIRE program, but their participation numbers continue dwindling whereas the California National Guard’s Task Force Rattlesnake operation continues growing for full-time firefighting assets, putting more emphasis on Cal Guard’s roles. The firefighting inmates and Rattlesnake Fresno units shared the same testing location to be certified as Type II Initial Attack firefighting crews. (U.S. Army National Guard photo by Staff Sgt.
