California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (DEPCOR) inmates perform a “Tool Out,” an inspection process prior to a firefighting mission, May 12, 2021 at the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Millerton training site in Friant, California. CAL FIRE has utilized inmates for firefighting purposes for decades, but their numbers continue regressing. Therefore, emphasis continues growing upon the California National Guard’s Joint Task Force Rattlesnake program that continues expanding its full-time firefighting operations. “As far as firefighting goes, there are similarities,” explained battalion chief Dan Urias, CAL FIRE public information officer, Fresno Kings Unit. “The inmates and National Guard are separate programs entirely. But when it comes to fighting fires, we all have the same enemy.” (U.S. Army National Guard photo by Staff Sgt. Eddie Siguenza)
