    Federal Vaccine Response

U.S. Army Pfc. Nicholas Adams-Motley, an Indianapolis, Ind. native and water treatment specialist with the 138th Combat Support Company, stationed in Brazil, Ind., poses during a break from conducting vaccination efforts at the state-led, federally-supported community vaccination center in Gary, Ind., April 18, 2021. Adams-Motley is part of a group of U.S. Army National Guard personnel supporting the vaccination efforts. His main responsibilities as a pharmacy runner include transporting COVID-19 vaccinations safely from the pharmacy to the vaccination station in a timely manner.

As soon as Adams-Motley returned to Indiana in September of 2020 after completing his advanced individual training as a water treatment specialist, he immediately was placed on COVID-19 support orders in November. “I was working in long-term care facilities, then switched to COVID-19 vaccination support,” Adams-Motley said. “It’s been practically non-stop since I finished training, but Sunday service keeps me positive and motivated.”

Although the community vaccination center is open every day, including Sundays, Adams-Motley gets permission to take an hour to attend online religious services during his duty hours and keeps close by his battle buddies so they can listen in at the pharmacy tent. “It lifts people's spirits,” he said. “The Army practices freedom of religion, so since this time is important to me, my supervisors and battle buddies understand and support me.” U.S. Northern Command, through U.S. Army North, remains committed to providing continued, flexible Department of Defense support to the Federal Emergency Management Agency as part of the whole-of-government response to COVID-19.
