This Brown Pelican finds food and respite at the J.N. Ding Darling Wild Life Refuge. Brown Pelicans are huge, stocky seabirds. They have thin necks and very long bills with a stretchy throat pouch used for capturing fish. Their wings are very long and broad and are often noticeably bowed when the birds are gliding. The J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, which is not a part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' (USACE) South Florida Ecosystem Program, provides vital habitat. USACE and its partners work to improve the quantity, quality, timing and distribution of water throughout South Florida. It is representative of the work being done by federal and state agencies to restore and manage the South Florida ecosystem for wildlife conservation and safe habitat.
