The muzzle of an M16A4 service rifle is shown in detail as a recruit sights in on a practice target during grass week aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., March 30, 2021. The purpose of the muzzle is to control recoil, barrel rise and side-to-side movement during shooting, which is caused by the torque of the bullet as it fires. The muzzle also assists in suppressing the sound of the rifle firing, keeping the shooter's position discreet. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt. Dana Beesley)
