U.S. Army Spc. William Elrod, a native of Salisbury, North Carolina, and a combat medic with 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), went 33-1 through high school and one year of amateur boxing before joining the Army. “I got kicked out of football for fighting so my mom signed me up for boxing,” Elrod said. “Making that switch was exactly what I needed.” In addition to the physical benefits, Elrod said that boxing has helped him in the Army in more ways than one. “In boxing you have to still maintain your awareness and attention to detail even when you are tired,” he said. “That has allowed me to stay focused during a stressful situation.” Elrod is currently working as a vaccinator at the Wolstein Community Vaccination Center in Cleveland. “This is the coolest thing I’ve done in the Army. It’s an honor to be serving here,” he said. U.S. Northern Command, through U.S. Army North, remains committed to providing continued, flexible Department of Defense support to the Federal Emergency Management Agency as part of the whole-of-government response to COVID-19.
