Pfc. Southern Nixon Jr. was recently awarded the Congressional Gold Medal- the highest civilian honor awarded by Congress- during a ceremony at Woodland Middle School in Stockbridge, Ga., where he now serves as a nutrition assistant. Nixon was one of about 20 thousand Marines trained at Montford Point while it served as the recruit training area for African Americans from 1942 to 1949.
