U.S Marine Corps Sgt. Jovany Gutierrez, driver with III Marine Expeditionary Force, receives the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal from Lt. Gen. H. Stacy Clardy, III MEF commanding general, for saving an Okinawan woman’s life on Mar. 12, 2021. On the morning of Jan. 6, 2021, Gutierrez witnessed a woman fall unconscious in the middle of the street. After seeing the impending danger of the situation, he quickly positioned his car to block oncoming traffic and assisted the unconscious woman off the road as he waved down another driver to call an ambulance.
“I think it’s something that anyone can be expected to do,” said Gutierrez. “It’s especially our duty as Marines stationed here on Okinawa. I hope to motivate other Marines to always want to do the right thing at the right time.”
